Our Mt. Shasta pond, Dragonfly Roost, 2008

We arrived late on New Year's Eve, 2007.
When we awoke the next morning, it was a new year, 2008, BUT
we were distressed to find what appeared to be a 'hole' in the snow where the pond should of been.
We feared that 'range cattle' had devastated our pond!

It wasn't until the snow melted, (& that wasn't until May because the winter of 2008 was a BIG snow year -17' fell, and we had 9' on the ground at one time in February)
that we were relieved to find that the cows hadn't 'trashed' the pond.
We finally figured out that what had happened is that a lot of snow had fallen, but the weather wasn't cold enuf to freeze the pond surface. So the snow that fell into the pond kept melting and the excess water that melted into the pond kept flowing out the overflow, so by the time the ice formed, several feet had already accumulated on the ground around the pond,
and hence, the discrepancy in snow levels over the two areas!
